Crystal growth by Tokujin

Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka does not sculpt his work, but grows it. His Venus chair was created by immersing a plastic mesh substrate into a tank filled with a chemical solution. Gradually crystals precipitate onto the substrate and give structure to the chair. It might not be the most comfortable place to take a seat, but it’s a great example of guided growth. Yoshioka has experimented with various other crystalline structures ranging from Greek sculptures to entire rooms. Maybe a scale replica of the Fortress of Solitude isn’t too far off.

Designer Werner Aisslinger unveiled a brilliant living chair at this year’s Milan Design Week that is grown from the ground up instead of being produced in a factory. The green chair consists of a live plant that is growing in a specialized shape set by a steel mold. When the mold is removed, it leaves behind a naturally cultivated seat to perch upon.

Kinetic Wind sculptures

Windswept is a wind-driven kinetic façade consisting of 612 freely-rotating directional arrows creating a large-scale observational instrument that reveals the complex interactions between the wind and the building. The wind arrows serve as discrete data points indicating the direction of local flow within the larger phenomenon.

Commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission for permanent installation at the Randal Museum, 199 Museum Way, San Francisco, CA 94114.

Wind Wall is a 32’ high and 85’ long wall of wind-activated pendulums covering the entire front façade of LIGO’s Science Education Center. Each pendulum is magnetically coupled with its neighbor so that the whole wall reveals beautiful fluid-like motions as energy is transferred from one pendulum to the next. The artwork transforms a static building façade into a slowly undulating surface similar to a large piece of fabric rippling in the wind. With winds greater than 15 knots, the wall’s coherent wave-like movement becomes more chaotic as the pendulums break their mutual magnetic coupling. The pendulums can also be manually activated by LIGO Science Education Center visitors.
